Abstract

Purpose: To investigate the influence of photobiomodulation associated with Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy in patients with muscle Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD). Methods: This is a randomized, blinded trial-clinical study with a sample of 11 women with muscle TMD, divided into two groups. The Experimental Group (EG) composed of 05 volunteers submitted to Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy associated with photobiomodulation and the Positive Control Group (CG) composed of 06 women submitted to Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy associated with inactive photobiomodulation (placebo). The intervention was performed in 12 sessions: an evaluation, 10 sessions of speech therapy associated with photobiomodulation, and a reassessment. For the outcomes were considered the investigation of pain perception using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), the investigation of sensitivity to palpation with the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC / TMD) protocol, and quality of life (QOL) verification through the Oral Health Impact Profile - short form (OHIP-14) protocol. Results: the EG had an increase in the measures of the opening and mandibular protrusion movements, and evidenced improvement in the assessment of QOL. Conclusion: The Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy when associated with photobiomodulation contributed to the increase in the range of mandibular movements, with important gains in the perception of the quality of life and with significant improvement in the painful conditions of volunteers with TMD.
